One of the first decisions that need to be made is what business structure to use. The business structure might as a sole trader\, partnership\, company or trust. This decision affects many legal relationships\, as well as tax. This series of workshops will provide an overview of important tax considerations that people about to commence a business should consider. \nAbout the workshop:\nThis workshop will consider how the business structures (whether a sole trader\, partnership\, company or trust) can influence who has the tax obligations\, as well as the rate of tax. This workshop will explain: \n\nthe basic premise of the different business structures\nhow your business structure choice can affect income\, deductions and tax rates\, and\nhow the business structure influences the relationship with workers (such as employees and contractors).\n\nAbout the presenter:\nDr Melissa Belle\nDr Melissa Belle Isle is a lecturer in taxation law. Melissa’s research focuses on Australian small business cash flow concerns due to taxation and owner literacy. \nMelissa is also passionate about improving the tax literacy of Australians and regularly delivers learning opportunities to community groups to assist with increases in literacy. Melissa is co-director of the Griffith Tax Clinic. \nThe Griffith Tax Clinic provides a free tax advisory service to unrepresented taxpayers and allows Griffith students to further their skills to be work-ready once completing their studies. \n

DESCRIPTION:Mentoring for Growth (M4G) is a mentoring program which helps you to engage with experienced business mentors through a free mentoring session. Our experienced mentors volunteer their time to help business owners and build stronger small businesses across Queensland. \nM4G offers insights\, options and suggestions relating to challenges and opportunities that you may be facing in your business. \nEligible businesses\nTo register for an M4G session\, your business must have: \n\nan Australian business number (ABN)\nQueensland headquarters or significant Queensland operations\ncommenced business operations\na specific business opportunity or challenge to discuss.\n\nHow our mentors can assist you\nM4G business mentors can help you with a range of business challenges or issues you may be facing. Your mentors have a broad range of experience\, knowledge and expertise to offer. Some common discussion topics include these business basics: \n\ncash flow\ngrowth strategies\nmarketing and sales\nbusiness development\nfinance\nhuman resources\nworkforce management\ncybersecurity\nexport and investment.\n\nWe will use the information provided on your registration form to identify the best available mentor with the most relevant skills\, experience and knowledge for your business needs. \nDepending on the stage of your business\, we have mentors who have connections in the investment community\, however we cannot guarantee that mentors will provide this information. \nNote: Mentors cannot provide you with any kind of professional advice\, including legal\, financial or human resources (HR) assistance. \nHow M4G sessions are delivered\nM4G is available to businesses across Queensland and sessions are currently being delivered predominantly online. \nThere are 3 types of sessions: \nStart-up sessions\nStart-up sessions are available for early stage businesses and will provide guidance and insights on establishing strong business foundations and understanding the fundamentals of starting a business. \nThese sessions run for 45 minutes with one mentor. \nMentor chats\nMentor chats are available for established businesses requiring assistance to address a particular business challenge or opportunity. \nThese sessions generally run for 60 minutes with two mentors. \nMentor panels\nMentor panels are available for established businesses that are experiencing significant growth\, making a substantial financial turnover or are expanding their workforce. They may also be looking at succession planning. \nThese sessions will provide strategic insight and suggestions around navigating growth\, opportunities and challenges. \nThe sessions generally run for 90 minutes with 3–4 mentors\, including a chairperson. \nHow to register for M4G\nComplete our registration form and provide as much information as you can about the challenges you are experiencing. \nThis information will help us to select the best mentor(s) for you\, and to schedule a free session without delay. Our mentors also rely on your registration information to prepare for your mentoring session. \nIf you have a business plan\, there is an option to submit a copy with your registration. \n

DESCRIPTION:Logan Office of Economic Development (LOED) has partnered with Griffith University Tax Clinic and Small Business Financial Counselling Service to present you with this workshop. \nCommencing a business is difficult with many decisions required to be made. One of the decisions that sometimes is overlooked is the ‘tax’ implications of running a business. Tax is an important consideration as ignoring it can result in penalties and interest charges\, but it can also influence the cash flow of the business. This series of workshops will provide an overview of business cash flow and how tax can influence it. \nAbout the workshop:\nThis workshop will consider how the various types of taxes (particularly income tax and GST) can influence a business’s cash flow\, not only in terms of profit margin but also when payments are due. The workshop will also look at: \n\nCash flow concept\nHow tax (income tax\, GST and superannuation) can influence cash flow\, and\nHow hiring workers influence cash flow and tax obligations.\n\nAbout the presenter:\nBrett Freudenberg\nBrett Freudenberg is a Professor – Taxation at Griffith University (Australia). \nBrett is known for his research expertise in the tax law and policy issues facing private enterprises\, as evidenced by his Fulbright Scholarship (2006) and over 90 refereed publications in leading Australian and international journals. \nBrett is passionate about education being a transformative process\, and his effectiveness as a teacher has been recognised through five national awards (including the award of two Australian Learning and Teaching Council citations: 2008 & 2011). \nDr Melissa Belle\nDr Melissa Belle Isle is a lecturer in taxation law. We’ll then open up to a Q & A. \nThis is your opportunity to have your business questions answered by a respected and recognised business mentor and entrepreneur and openly discuss business challenges. \nTickets will sell out for this event so please book early!\n*Bookings Close Thursday 15th May 2025 at midnight. \n*Please note parking will be at a premium with another event 5.30 pm\n** Food will be served at 6 pm \nAbout Phillip Di Bella\n\nPhillip Di Bella is a Director at the Di Bella Group of Companies and a highly respected business entrepreneur with a unique ability to visualise and commercialise what many others may never see. Though initially known for the establishment of Di Bella Coffee\, which became Australia’s largest specialty coffee company\, Phillip’s entrepreneurial spirit has brought success to numerous businesses\, most recently\, The Coffee Commune. \nDuring the early years of Di Bella Coffee\, Phillip was listed in the 2006\, 2007 and 2009 Business Review Weekly Fast 100 and received numerous accolades including Entrepreneur of the Year Awards\, Customer Service Awards and Business Owner Awards. \nHis roles within the Brisbane community have included Director of Brisbane Marketing and Chair of the CBD Economic Development Board. Phillip’s significant local involvement was acknowledged in 2009\, and in 2014 as the recipients of the Lord Mayor’s Corporate Citizenship Award. Phillip is also an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Department of International Business and Asian Studies at Griffith University\, in recognition of his exceptional success in his field and outstanding community contribution. \nWe are partnering with Centenary Chamber\, Sunny bank Chamber\, Logan Chamber and Brisbane inner West chamber of commerce for this event. \n  \n  \n
