DESCRIPTION:Logan Office of Economic Development (LOED) has partnered with Griffith University Tax Clinic to present you with this workshop. \nCommencing a business is difficult with many decisions required to be made. One of the first decisions that need to be made is what business structure to use. The business structure might as a sole trader\, partnership\, company or trust. This decision affects many legal relationships\, as well as tax. This series of workshops will provide an overview of important tax considerations that people about to commence a business should consider. \nAbout the workshop:\nThis workshop will consider how the business structures (whether a sole trader\, partnership\, company or trust) can influence who has the tax obligations\, as well as the rate of tax. This workshop will explain: \n\nthe basic premise of the different business structures\nhow your business structure choice can affect income\, deductions and tax rates\, and\nhow the business structure influences the relationship with workers (such as employees and contractors).\n\nAbout the presenter:\nBrett Freudenberg\nBrett Freudenberg is a Professor – Taxation at Griffith University (Australia). \nBrett is known for his research expertise in the tax law and policy issues facing private enterprises\, as evidenced by his Fulbright Scholarship (2006) and over 90 refereed publications in leading Australian and international journals. \nBrett is passionate about education being a transformative process\, and his effectiveness as a teacher has been recognised through five national awards (including the award of two Australian Learning and Teaching Council citations: 2008 & 2011). \nDr Melissa Belle\nDr Melissa Belle Isle is a lecturer in taxation law. Melissa’s research focuses on Australian small business cash flow concerns due to taxation and owner literacy. \nMelissa is also passionate about improving the tax literacy of Australians and regularly delivers learning opportunities to community groups to assist with increases in literacy. DESCRIPTION:Over a period of two days\, this workshop highlights lean manufacturing and other related productivity improvement concepts\, reinforced by the simulation of a series of manual processes (typically representing production or office processes) by using hands-on and ‘learning by doing’ principles. \nSeveral ‘Runs’ will be conducted in the workshop\, with participants progressively improving each run by changing the simulation process according to the Lean principles introduced between each run.
